The horizontal beam is stamped 'Class B', 'Capacity 4lb', 'Agate Balance' and 'Day & Millward Patentee' and the heavy pan has the remains of the name and 'Makers'. The eight weights are marked from 2lb down to 1/4oz and will enable up to 4lb to be weighed and the scale will dismantle easily into seven pieces, plus the mahogany base. Bate's Saccharometer SI.1 Original quality, 18th or 19th century, Bate's patent saccharometer in the original mahogany box, manufactured by 'Buss, 33 Harton Garden, London'. The fitted interior is complete with the brass float, four brass counter weights and the thermometer mounted on a brass backplate. The thermometer plate and the rod on the float are both engraved with the manufacture's name and address, as is the ivorine plaque to the top of the lid.
