The engraving to the original oval cushioned shaped plate details "Columbian Press No. 1305, Clymer Dixon & Co, original patentees and manufacturers 10 Finsbury St London" and "1849". The engraving is in a variety of scripts. The ivorine plaque details: "This brass plate was removed from an old hand-press in Thurnam's Printing Works on which the Carlisle Patriot was once printed and was fixed here when the shop and works moved from 11 English St to these premises in 1958."
