Sepia Decorated Cheese Dish
Sepia Decorated Cheese Dish
See our "Dairy Equipment" section for current stock of similar items.

Original, quality, late 19th century, sepia decorated cheese dish and cover. This is probably the most exciting cheese dish we have seen, albeit not in the best condition. This wonderful example has pictorial panels to the top and three sides and decoration to all the edges of both the base and cover and both pieces are stamped with the registration number for the year 1891. First, the very detailed panels. The top depicts a scene from the Aesop's fable 'The Fox and The Crow', with the fable printed within ribbon swags. One side depicts "Too Much Cheese" with three rats at the cheese baited in a gin trap. The other side has a rat on the billiard table with a picture on the wall of 'Welsh Rabbits' and the reverse entitled "Wise Man of Gotham" with a scene from 'The Merry Tales of The Mad Men of Gotham'. The scene shows three cheese's rolling down the hill. Condition: although bright and clean in colour to the outside and decorated areas, this item does show much discolouration to the inside consistent with use, as cheese does leave fat stains over a period of time stain. This tends to penetrate into the glazing. There are also two chips to the base and a repair to the back corner of the lid, with a hairline crack running away from it to the top. It looks superb, when displayed. All is complete, but not for use.
